I don't use Gandi Blog anymore!

It is very hard to use Gandi blog for everyday blogging, you have to use the handle you cannot create an easy to remember username etc etc etc, it's just not good enough for me, moving to blogger!

See you there.

iPhone mini review

It has been a while since my last post. Today i want to talk about my new toy - iPhone.

First of all, obviously EDGE is not fast enough, no doubt, it needs HSDPA, i don't want 3G voice calling as that reduces battery life enormously, but having ability to use HSDPA would be really cool.

SMS - no drafs folder, no sent folder, no delivery receipts, that should be standard, no change of appearance.
Phone - no contacts search, actually Spotlight is a must for the iPhone, it should search everywhere! also no ability to set mp3 as a ringtone
Safari - Great, but missing Flash!!! Safari 3.1 perhaps on an iPhone.
iPod - ah, good stuff, no doubt here
Photo - all good, no problems, but I want to send a picture over Bluetooth.
Email - oh well, that works pretty cool, but hang on if you got a photo as an attachment you cannot save it to the Photos, not Cool at all.
Bluetooth - Needs file transfer, need Contact transfer, needs A2DP, needs Internet Gateway so i can use it with my macbook pro.
Activation - I want ability to unlock my iPhone if i am legitimate user and use it in other countries with my sim card instead of roaming!

There is no Delete All anywhere in the phone and also no multiple selects!!!

I also want iPhone to be able to put into the Storage mode, so i can transfer whatever i want.

A lot of people talking about SDK, I really really hope that it will fix most of the above problems, i already see great number of applications for jailbreaked iPhones out there, but something tells me Apple can screw it up and just make SDK for widgets or have limited ability to extend the basic ones with Advances one. The Installer concept is great.

As for now, it is a very very nice Ipod Touch with phone capabilities :) So, I think it is going back to Apple.

First time in US

This is year is superb in term of traveling. I have visited our headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey twice and have to say the more I go the more I like United States. It seems to be this country is made for people, everything is quite affordable compared to UK :-)

6 month with ALK Technologies

Well, it has been tough 6 month and I really enjoyed it. I learned more about portable UI, C and C++. More about threading, more about making generic code, More about being patient and how business works.

First 2 weeks with ALK Technologies

Hello ha,
Well, it has been 2 weeks, I am very excited and enjoying my new role. I am learning plenty about the UI and the idea of having a change immidiately shown on the screen is really awsome! It is really different from the middle size company like Symbian, so I am learning that as well, some things look weird and different, but overall I am pretty impressed.
It really interesting to see how people using Symbian OS, not using Symbian Coding Standards, not thinking about performance and memory management.
I am really glad that I started in Sybmian, I think this experience will help a lot!

Leaving Symbian

15th of December 2006 was my last day at Symbian office in Cambridge. On 3rd of January my contract is finished and I am going to continue my career at ALK Technologies, makers of Copilot SatNav. It has been a great time working for Symbian. I have started as a graduate (P1) and now considered to be a great software engineer (P3) only in 2.5 years. Unfortunately, Symbian doesn't do any application development or GUI and it is time to go learn more about. A lot more, new challenges and new technologies! I would recommend to anyone working for Symbian, but you will have to have a suitable DNA. It seems to me that my blood will have it for a while even though I am not longer with them.

.Mac should be free

Recently I became a Mac User, I just love almost everything Apple does. However, I hate apple for not making .Mac free. I think it should be free! I think the model should be everyone who buys an apple pc should get 1gb free .mac . If a person wants more space, he should pay for it. It stupid to charge so much for something which is yahoo and google offers for free, backup is free with mozy.com (mac support is coming) 2gb of backup for free. C'mon Apple you can do it.

Also, the backup in .mac is unencrypted which means anyone can hack your data!!!

Symbian OS

Although I work for Symbian for about 2.5 years now and truly think it is a great operating system there are some things I don't like. I don't like that you cannot write for Symbian, instead you have to write for S60, UIQ, MOAP-S and etc. I think for development it is a nightmare. I don't like that there are no SDKs for MacOSX and Linux. I don't like that the documentation is not very readable and nothing compared to Java SDK.

Love Mac !

I was a Windows user since MS-DOS and remember days of Windows 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, 2000 and XP. I even played with Vista. However, in April I decided to buy a Mac. A small box arrived and everything just worked out of the box. Everything is simple, easy and highly usable. Perhaps, Macs will never make to enterprise and business markets, but they would have tons of technicions to support their systems. For a home use in my opinion there is nothing better then Mac. Get a Mac! It's really worth it!.

Samsung D900 mini-review

Well, alghough I have about 4 Symbian phones I use Samsung D900 on everyday basis. Here the small list of advantages and disadvantages:

+ Size
+ Screen
+ Battery life seems to be ok 3-4 days
+ Simple & Fast Interface

- Having a 3MP camera with autofocus is useless, it is so slow, about 15 seconds to make a shot (your objects cannot be moving as well)
- No option to set your own tone for sms
- No option to set different volume for ring, alarm, sms
- No auto save to sent folder
- Only 200 sms, and always the first 10-15 sms saved on your sim card
- No automatic Alarm for birthday settings in Phonebook
- Very inaccurate PC Synchronisation
- Poor Java support (cannot access camera API, cannot even run GMail Application)

But still quite good, neat machine and doesn't take space in your pocket. If I would buy a phone today I would probably go with Nokia 5500 or Sony Ericsson Z610i in non-Smartphone Market.

S60 Most annoying and confusing UI and Apps

I don't want to go into how S60 became so complicated and slow, there are other blogs for it, but what I don't understand is how Nokia implemented so simple Alarm clock as it becomes useless !!!

If you have your list of annoynces please do not hesitate to comment!

Sony Ericsson M600i

I don't understand two things about M600i Messaging:

1. Why all envelope icons are the same, so the only way to separate read messages from unread is a BOLD font. Why not use open envelope for read messages and closed envelope for unread. that's seems to be user friendly and intiutive. 2. Why on such a big display you cannot see all of the folders??? would be great if you can expand them as Todays' View.

Impovements suggestions:

It would be great to see some kind of extensions to the icons in messaging, as an example like all mail programs have small annotation if the message was replied, forwarded etc.

No more Hosting!

Well, I have cancelled my hosting with jaguarPC.com and moved to gandi.net! Finally, I am in control of my domain and don't need to contact support each time I want to change anything. I think for a home user it is not necessary to have a hosting, and domain name with some blog, email and web space is more than enough. :-)
